Cool markets and Dutch design |
|
Amsterdam offers a myriad of shops, boutiques, and markets for every personality and budget. All the well known chain stores, from H&M to Zara are found down Kalverstraat, the longest and most popular shopping street in the city.
For a number of luxury and designer labels within steps from each other, head to PC Hooftstraat. Named after a 16th century poet, dramatist, and historian, this street is lined with fine boutiques, although locals prefer the original shops spread throughout the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) shopping district.
Be sure to not miss the ALBERT CUYPMARKT which claims to be Europe's longest street market. And if you're in the city on a Saturday, NOORDERMARKT is the popular farmer's market for organic food and bric-a-brac. On Mondays, head to the WATERLOOPLEIN flea market, where the city's young and trendy go for second hand clothing, old books, and pretty much anything.
For goodies and special items you can only get in Amsterdam, mark your shopping map with the following stores:
DUTCH STYLE
The Frozen Fountain
This shop is a showcase for contemporary Dutch designers, with furniture and home accessories from names like Moooi Studio, Piet Hein Eek, and Tord Boontje. As an icon of Dutch style, this is as much a shop as it is a gallery, having also organized exhibitions.
Mart Visser
As one of the country's leading designers, Mart Visser dresses the most famous women in the Netherlands. Check his most recent collections on his website, from haute couture to eyewear, then head to his shop opposite the Van Gogh Museum.
Menno Kroon
This reputable florist explores the daily markets to create its selection of bouquets that make up the shop. Go for the vibrant displays of colors and the interior design of the space, which changes regularly in ambience and theme. If you like what you see, the team behind this shop will travel to wherever you live across the globe to create a home, party, or corporate event just as special.
Shoebaloo
A futuristic or nightclub-like space on PC Hooftstraat is the showcase for some wild and cool shoe styles. There are other branches, but it's at this shop that fashionistas find the most fantastic displays and styles, from names like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, or Marc Jacobs.
ONE-STOP SHOPPING
De Bijenkorf
If you just can't go home without visiting a department store, this is the best one in the Netherlands, from its fantastic window displays to the variety of shops. There are also several eateries, including "La Ruche" which offers fine views from its window.
LOCAL FLAVORS
Puccini Bomboni
This contemporary glass store has a name inspired by the city's opera house nearby, but the products inside are a cultural attraction of another kind -- these are all unique chocolates made on-site and using only natural ingredients. There is no sugar, butter, or fondant in them either, but there are some unusual flavors mixed in, such as cognac, pepper, thyme, prune, lemongrass, among others. Think of it as chocolate couture, and you may observe it all being created through a glass façade to the side of the shop. See and taste all the shapes and styles of pure, milk, or white chocolate with their exotic fillings and take some home with you.
DE KAASKAMER - Runstraat 7
There's wine, fresh pasta, sauces, and other products at this legendary deli, but the reason to come here is for the cheese. "The Cheese Room" has hundreds of cheeses from around the country and Europe, which you may check out on a quick stop to grab a sandwich for lunch.
COOL DESIGNS
Droog
Renowned for developing experimental design projects and nurturing young talent, the team behind this shop that also doubles as a gallery has created what is arguably Amsterdam's most creative and coolest design space. Many of the products you'll see are limited editions, making this a must-go destination for design junkies.
SPRMRKT
This fabulous retro shop has groovy furniture classics mixed with new items by young designers. There are also hip vintage clothes, with some of them still in their original packaging. Not all of the pieces are on display, so be sure to check out the catalogue.
Pols Potten
It first started as a shop selling pottery from Spain and Portugal, but walk into the huge shop today in a former warehouse, and you'll find all kinds of household accessories. Check out the furniture section for the antiques and the modern pieces by local designers. Every object is distinctive, as are the constantly changing window displays.
