Many of Athens' bars are also cafés, and others also turn into clubs later at night. People spill out from lively bars and clubs into the streets in the Gazi and Psyrri neighborhoods, where you'll also find small tavernas with live Greek music as you eat. Everyone tends to be casual but stylishly dressed. Balthazar Bar, Athens
On weekends most clubs are packed until 5AM or later, and you'll probably recognize most of the music there, as DJs cater for international tastes. If you're in town in the summer, don't be surprised to find many places closed, as everyone moves to the coast or the islands.

Balthazar
Housed in a stately mansion, this hip hangout draws a crowd of beautiful people to its lantern-lit courtyard for cocktails and inventive cuisine. You may come just for the drinks, and sit outside by the palm trees as the DJs provide the soundtrack.

Nixon
The former U.S. president is the strange inspiration for this bar-restaurant, where even the toilet is named "Watergate." The food served is pasta or burguers, but what you come here for is the drinks. The place used to be a warehouse, but local architects placed wooden tables and leather sofas surrouned with retro reminders of the Nixon era (Life magazine covers and photo of the president), and created a surprisingly cool spot for a night out.

Frame Bar, Athens Frame Bar
Guest and resident DJs set up the party vibe at this bar-lounge-restaurant with one of the coolest design interiors in town. It's located inside the Saint George Lycabettus boutique hotel, and there are After Theater and finger food menus, as well as an a la carte menu for longer and more refined meals.

Baraonda
As one of the most glamorous and stylish places in town, this club-restaurant attracts the top DJs (national and international) to satisfy the most demanding crowds of thirty and fortysomethings in Athens. In summer, the garden area is one of the city's coolest oasis.

Island
Unbeatable in sophistication and style, Island has been one of the best night time destinations in Athens for years. The beautiful people sip cocktails to the sounds of chill-out music, while others try out the Mediterranean cuisine or the sushi. A covered Spanish-style patio serves as a tapas bar, with the same exquisite décor seen everywhere else on this "island" overlooking the sea.

Galaxy
Local stars flock to this chic bar on a terrace of the Hilton Hotel overlooking the Acropolis. In addition to the views, there are world music sounds as you sit on a sofa with drinks and Asian finger food. The contemporary minimalist space extends to the barbecue restaurant area, although the best reason to come here is for the vast selection of cocktails, whisky, and vodkas.

Bios
The bar at this creative arts center is quite popular with the city's alternative set, especially when there's a special event in the house. Be sure to check Bios' calendar of events when you're in town, which may be avant-garde music, art, or films. On other days simply go for the bar, drinking surrounded by its vintage furniture from the 1950s to the 70s.

Apsendi
We haven't yet experienced it ourselves, but apparently this bar-restaurant attracts chic crowds looking for a more sophisticated but still laid-back night out. Whether for after-work cocktails or a prolonged evening at the restaurant serving a fusion menu, the industrial space welcomes you to the sound of mainstream beats. It's found ten minutes away from the center of Athens and there are often theme nights, guest DJs, and live performers.
