Athens shopping guide |
|
Athens' major shopping areas are KOLONAKI (with Stadhiou, Voukourestiou, and Anagnostopoulou as the streets with the biggest concentration of major labels) and the pedestrianized ERMOU STREET with all of the mainstream chain stores for clothing and footwear. Also worth a browse is the popular MONASTIRAKI FLEA MARKET, the place for antiques, collectibles, and clothes, while for more upscale shopping, the Attica department store is the place to go.
ATHENS SPECIALTIES
Aristokratikon
Because everyone has a sweet tooth, be sure to pass by this shop selling traditional Greek delights since 1928. Not only will you love the chocolates, but the gift boxes make a good souvenir or present to take for a special someone back home.
Mastiha Shop
Mastiha refers to the mastic tree, or more specifically the resin taken from it that is added to a variety of foods, from feta cheese, to chocolate, to coffee for its health benefits. It's a Greek custom and this shop offers only mastiha products, beautifully packed and together with beauty products using the same ingredient.
Martinos
The Martino family has been in the business of antiques for over three generations. Its shop in Monastiraki is not to be missed, with centuries-old treasures, from jewelry to statuary. Many of these items (those over 100 years old) can not be sold to outside Greece without a special license, but you'll still find plenty of other tempting pieces that you'll be able to take back home.
Fanourakis
A family tradition for over a century, Fanourakis' exceptional jewelry masterpieces are created by hand and remain authentic treasures in Athens. Eighteen to 22-karat gold is used to create exquisite pieces with unusual shapes and motifs, and are some of the most lavish and enchanting gifts you'll find anywhere.
Museum of Cycladic Art Shop
Prehistoric, or Cycladic art, is the specialty of this museum and its shop is one of the most interesting you'll see in Athens. You'll find reproductions of figurines, ceramics, and jewelry, and even miniature olive trees that make a great souvenir or gift.
ATHENS STYLE
Boutique Kostetsos
Kostetsos uses Greek history as inspiration for the creative haute couture presented at this shop. It is not cheap, but one of the best fashion purchases you can make in Athens.

Local fashionistas love this shop in a former warehouse where they can find footwear and trendy fashions, including vintage Levi's.
Lakis Gavalas
The fashion-conscious youth that can afford the latest hip creations head to this shop that places famous international designers next to Gavalas' own label. Also check out the shoes and fragrances.
Yiorgos Eleftheriades
It all started with costume design, but now Eleftheriades uses natural fabrics to create edgy, high-design men's and women's fashions. If you're looking for Greek design, don't miss his shop.
