The night was made for partying |
|
Judging only by the number and variety of bars and clubs, Berlin has a phenomenal nightlife. Everything is mostly refreshingly unpretentious, with the biggest concentration of bars found in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg. Many of them have a charming living-room look, with a mixture of period furnishings often acquired at a flea market. They make great places to start a night out, hanging out there for a few drinks before a night of clubbing. Other crowds choose one of the sophisticated cocktail bars, but everyone usually ends up in the same type of clubs -- huge spaces (often former warehouses) pumping techno and house until the morning, making Berlin one of the world's major party cities.
BARS
103
Kastanienallee is Berlin's trendiest street, and stylish 103 is its most popular bar. Young locals invade it every weekend for brunch, although the interior design is really the main attraction. Just as attractive is the staff and the fashionable crowd that comes here at night for cocktails.
Green Door
One of the city's top cocktail spots, Green Door has an interesting living-room style décor, including a large illuminated dog and a telephone that also works as a lamp and cigar lighter. You may ask for classic cocktails or go for the original "Green Door Cocktail" that mixes lemon, sugar, mint, and champagne.
Bar am Lützowplatz
This is a classic cocktail bar that is a classy favorite of all types of locals. The happy hour here lasts for seven, between 2PM and 9PM. The Mai Tai is the drink to ask for, but you'll also want to check out the list of over one hundred champagnes. Sit on one of the Le Corbusier chairs drinking and chatting along with everyone else.
GREENWICH BAR - Gipsstraße 5, Mitte
When in East Berlin at night, the Greenwich Bar is an essential stop. This stylishly chic cocktail bar has a glamorous vibe, made famous after being featured in several design magazines. The name and attitude will remind you of New York, with a cool and casual crowd. This is our choice for a first stop in a bar-hopping and clubbing Berlin night.
Newton Bar
As perhaps the city's most famous bar, Newton receives both a smart local and tourist crowd. Named after the legendary German photographer, you'll also see his photographs on the walls, with huge nudes drawing the attention of those visiting for the first time. Come for post-dinner drinks (especially if you decided to dine at the recommended Lutter und Wegner restaurant), and you'll find an impressive cocktail list with a recommended whisky and Martini selection.
Würgeengel
This charming bar is a romantic option for wine for two served by a very professional staff. The whiskys are the favorite of the middle-aged crowd, while candles and crystal lamps illuminate the red booths and small wooden tables, transporting you to the 1930's.
Bangaluu Club
A former post office is now one of Berlin's most attractive hotspots when the sun goes down. A sexy all-white lounge space on the ground floor is the bar, while dinner is served upstairs before the dance floor opens.
Victoria Bar
Many could compete for the best cocktail bar in Berlin, but Victoria Bar would always rank at the top by any standard. This stylish hotspot with a sleek décor and a dressed up crowd is the place for drinks and to see and be seen. Dark wood tones, and some retro styles and furnishings were the choices of the designers responsible for the interior, which may be seen only if you make it past the door -- there's a door policy where the jet set are given priority.
Zebrano
Zebrano is a fun retro-styled bar popular with young locals. Named after the exotic African wood the DJ booth and other furnishings are made of, the interior also features TV screens showing short films or documentaries. The cosmopolitan crowd enjoys the relaxed ambiance and the DJs' selection of reggae and soul.
Reingold
House-infused jazz are the sounds you'll hear at this elegant lounge and cocktail bar. Sip your cosmopolitan on the red leather seats before joining the beautiful people in the other lounges in the neighborhood.
Puro
The 20th floor of the Europa-Center is home to the Puro Sky Lounge, offering 360-degree views above the city through its glassed walls. Chill out by the fireplace and enjoy a cocktail on a candlelit lounge corner.
Spindler & Klatt
This cool bar on a former factory complex on the waterfront has a minimalist interior and offers fine food. Look for the occasional jazz performances.
CLUBS
Berghain
This club in an industrial-style warehouse is for hard core party animals. It's the ultimate Berlin club experience, the place everyone wants to get into. It does have a strict door policy and the long lines at the door often mean waiting for quite some time, even at 6 or 7AM. Once inside you'll find a free-spirit crowd both gay and straight on the sweaty dance floor moving to loud techno spun by superstar DJs. A more intimate rooftop bar is found on the second floor for people watching or taking a break from dancing.
Weekend
Beautiful people and city views are found at Weekend, one of the German capital's hottest clubs. It's an ultra-hip place for which you will have to dress your trendy best. It is not easy getting in, but if you're a pretty girl or boy or know someone who is, you increase your chances. The party is on the 13th floor, where electro and tech house are the beats to dance to.
Sage
A more affluent, glamorous crowd chooses Sage for their night out, a large and stylish super club with several rooms, an outdoor chillout area and VIP pool. The sounds are house and techno.
Geburtstagsklub
A diverse and irreverent crowd heads to Geburtstagsklub on different days, when different music styles can be heard. This former storage warehouse has a popular reggae night and a famous gay party - only two of the variety of events held here.
Icon
Drum'n'bass and hip hop are the main sounds here, spun by international DJs and danced to by a cosmopolitan and casual young crowd. It also has a reputation as a pick-up joint and can get quite crowded, with the dance floor drenched in sweat.
Watergate
The riverside Watergate is a large, comfortable, and cool club with great views from its huge glass windows and outdoor terrace. Along with the biggest DJ names, you may also catch live bands. The crowd depends on the party being thrown, but they'll always be dressed in style.
