THE NEW W BARCELONA HOTEL – MODERN MASTERPIECE OR AN EYESORE?
Designed by local architect Ricardo Bofill, Barcelona’s newest hotel is already a city landmark — and a much controversial one. W Barcelona resembles a glass sail by the waterfront (its nickname is “the Sail Hotel”), but critics say it ruins the views of the sea from the port while others claim it is even a “scandalous” construction, a private building in a key public space of the city.
All the controversy only confirms that the 100m (328ft)-high building is meant to leave no one indifferent, with representatives of the Starwood Hotels which owns the W chain having been reported to call it “a modernist masterpiece of avant-garde architecture.”
Whatever your opinion of the exterior, there’s no denying that the services inside are superb. So much so, that UCityGuides has already awarded it one U_Star. From its rooms or fantastic pool you can admire views of the sea and the coastline, while additional relaxing moments are offered at the spa. If that’s not enough, unwind under the rainfall showers in your room’s bathroom.
