You wouldn’t know it from the graffiti-ridden façade, but behind it is one of Buenos Aires’ hottest new restaurants. That façade was specially commissioned and helps peak curiosity of what’s it like inside. Located in the hip Palermo Hollywood neighborhood, “Tegui” has an intimate dining area looking out to a banana tree courtyard, and a well-designed bar and wine cellar by the entrance. The name derives from chef German Martitegui who prepares a contemporary Argentinean menu at not-exactly-cheap prices, and there is a similarly high-priced wine list. However, the prices are justified by the quality and you won’t mind staying for an entire evening when you try one of the cocktails at the bar.

When European cafés became the preferred hangouts of their city’s intellectuals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they turned into cultural institutions with ornate, palatial interiors. Many if not most of them remain open today, although the main visitors are now tourists guided by their guidebooks. Those cafés are now essentially museums where coffee and pastries are served at high prices, while others have been turned into full-blown restaurants, and a few still attempt to keep their cultural heritage alive by hosting literary and other cultural events.
The biggest café cities are Paris, Vienna, Venice, and Budapest, where café interiors are at their most sumptuous, but you’ll find some extraordinarily beautiful cafés throughout Europe and even in the big cities of the Americas that emulated the grandiosity of the Old World.
At UCityGuides we’re always looking for what’s new and extraordinary, but also love to spend some time in what the past has done best. So after countless coffees, pastries, calories, and overpriced drinks, we bring you the list of the ten most beautiful cafés in the world: THE WORLD’S 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL CAFÉS

It opened in 2004 and is still the hottest hotel in the city. That’s because it’s hard to surpass the quality of the services and the design of such an extraordinary place. Awarded the maximum 3 U_Stars, Buenos Aires’ Faena Hotel and Universe is worth going to the Argentinean capital just to experience it. Philippe Starck collaborated in the design of the space, but this is nothing like any of his other or other designers’ hotels. Here, rooms and public areas are theatrical spaces with hot colors, mirrors, velvet, and marble, creating a stunning, romantic hotel unlike any other. It makes sense that the man behind it is a fashion designer, as it is obvious that style and refinement was taken very seriously. What was a brick warehouse has been converted into a grand urban retreat offering spacious rooms, a spa, pool with poolside bar, an art gallery, a gourmet market, two restaurants, and a cabaret-style music hall. Take a look at the photo gallery below and get to know Faena’s fabulous universe.

This weekend Brussels will show the final films of its 10-day Gay and Lesbian Film Festival that takes place every January. It’s the first major gay event of 2009, a big year for gay travel.

If there is one travel market that doesn’t seem to ever be affected by global economic crisis is the gay market, as gay and lesbian travelers tend to always have more disposable income.

The two major international gay events this year will be the EuroPride taking place in Zurich in May, and the World Outgames in July in Copenhagen. This year is also the 60th anniversary of Stonewall, so expect special celebrations in every gay pride march around the world this summer. One to see to be believed is São Paulo’s, with an estimated 3.5 million participants making it the city with the biggest gay pride celebrations in the world.

Other cities not exactly known for a happening gay scene are slowly opening their closet doors and becoming major gay hotspots to be discovered this year. If you go to São Paulo’s gay pride, be sure to take the opportunity to also visit Buenos Aires which is only a short flight away. Its Axel Gay Hotel is one of the best (and most stylish) gay hotels in the world, and the city’s reasonable prices are just as attractive as its people.
In Europe, choose one of its sunniest destinations, the very pink Lisbon with its beaches and lively street life.

If you prefer to stick with the always-popular Mykonos, be sure to also spend some time in the Greek capital — Athens has much more to explore than just the Acropolis and ancient ruins.

UCityGuides offers you a list of the 9 gay destinations you should experience in 2009, and you can find what they are in the travel gaydar page.
