When European cafés became the preferred hangouts of their city’s intellectuals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they turned into cultural institutions with ornate, palatial interiors. Many if not most of them remain open today, although the main visitors are now tourists guided by their guidebooks. Those cafés are now essentially museums where coffee and pastries are served at high prices, while others have been turned into full-blown restaurants, and a few still attempt to keep their cultural heritage alive by hosting literary and other cultural events.
The biggest café cities are Paris, Vienna, Venice, and Budapest, where café interiors are at their most sumptuous, but you’ll find some extraordinarily beautiful cafés throughout Europe and even in the big cities of the Americas that emulated the grandiosity of the Old World.
At UCityGuides we’re always looking for what’s new and extraordinary, but also love to spend some time in what the past has done best. So after countless coffees, pastries, calories, and overpriced drinks, we bring you the list of the ten most beautiful cafés in the world: THE WORLD’S 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL CAFÉS

Perhaps generated by the interest in checking out its much talked-about mostly-white interior, the new Orlando di Castello Restaurant has become one of Vienna‘s hippest hotspots. Also helping is the fact that it’s open throughout the day and allows you to dine at any time, as well as treating yourself to some extraordinary pastries which you can take home.
The restaurant’s initials (ODC) are seen throughout much of the custom-wallpapered interior, together with floral patterns and upholstered furniture, and some metallic elements. All together they form an elegant space for a place that’s buzzing throughout the day. It serves an excellent breakfast which includes a choice of soy yogurt for vegans and a gluten-free option. The main menu offers international dishes heavily inspired by Italy and there’s a vast selection of European wines.
Best of all is that everything is quite reasonably-priced for such a beautiful, hip place and for a city generally thought of as expensive.
It’s open from Monday to Saturday, from 7:30AM to midnight and located on Freyung 1, a street not far from the Rathaus building, Vienna’s monumental city hall.

Vienna’s Park is the kind of shop UCityGuides.com likes to find. It’s a space that could as easily be a gallery showcasing international talents while also promoting home-grown products. In the five years that it’s been in existence, this open minimalist space has become the must-visit destination for those with a passion for fashion and design in Vienna. It was that kind of passion that led its owners to come up with the idea, a concept store offering contemporary design in the form of fashion, streetwear, and printed media. This is also not just a shop, but also a place for fashion shows and exhibitions in a spacious all-white interior, becoming a medium of communication about contemporary design in the center of the Austrian capital. Creativity, innovation, and quality are the keywords, offering a wide range of styles for women and men, including shoes, jewelry, and accessories like belts and sunglasses. The art books, fashion magazines and other periodicals are intended to make a connection to the products in the shop, as well as keep the fashion-conscious updated on the latest trends, meaning here you’ll not only get a sense of the trends of today, but also an idea of what’s coming up next.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn, the famous Austrian composer often called “The Father of the Symphony.” While Mozart and Beethoven may perhaps be more famous, Haydn was equally a prominent composer of the classical period, and Vienna will be commemorating him throughout the year. There will be dozens of concerts and exhibitions, including in his former residence, the Haydn House, which reopens today after a renovation of the interior. That’s where Haydn gave lessons to Beethoven and wrote most of his later works, and there are special events planned for March 31st, his birthday.

But Vienna is much more than a classical and imperial city, and a visit to the Museumsquartier will show you that it’s very much a city of today. Home to a number of museums showcasing everything from modern art to architecture, that huge cultural site contains both Baroque and modern buildings. It’s also a major hangout for the city’s hippest youth, thanks to its cafes, public spaces, and temporary exhibitions.

From there head to the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) to follow the history of design through its exhibits, and for a meal at its Österreicher Im MAK restaurant. It serves both classic and modern Viennese cuisine in a stylish minimalist interior that equally balances some classic touches in a contemporary space. Smaller, lighter dishes are served at the bar, one of the city’s top choices for after-work snacks.

For cocktails, the place is the Onyx Bar inside the Do & Do Design Hotel facing the city’s landmark cathedral. But you don’t have to stay at the hotel to enjoy the bar’s drinks, its views, and lounge music together with some of the city’s most fashionable crowds, and can choose to stay at the equally stylish Levante Parliament Hotel instead.

Before you go to bed you may want to hit the dancefloor at Passage, a super-club often hosting Europe’s super-DJs. There are very little furnishings here — the lighting fills the space.

All of the places mentioned above, together with all of Vienna’s best attractions, are covered in UCityGuides’ complete Vienna city guide.
