Eating & Drinking in Brussels |
|
The classic French cuisine served at the more sophisticated restaurants in Brussels has earned the city a number of Michelin stars and other awards. But the younger chefs are finally experimenting with other flavors, and the more recent, well-designed restaurants are starting to offer more diverse options. They tend to match the high standards set by the others in the past, and are often equally expensive. What that all means is that you'll eat very well and get what you pay for in the Belgian capital, especially if you choose one of the following cafes and restaurants:
Wittamer Cafe
On good weather days, sit at the terrace of this cafe and watch everyone coming and going to the antiques market nearby on weekends. On all the other days, simply come for the irresistible chocolates and pastries.
Cafe Belga
This is a good spot in the evenings when you can chill-out with the DJ sounds or the live music as you enjoy a beer or snack, although it's also a good choice at any time of the day for a sandwich or pastry.
Cospaia
Dine in a mostly-black contemporary design room, in a baroque space with huge portrait photographs, or choose to sit at the terrace. The menu lists international cuisine, and the bar awaits for post-dinner drinks.
Belga Queen
Portuguese architect-restaurateur Antoine Pinto converted a Belle Époque bank into a brasserie that has become a Brussels institution. It serves modern Belgian cuisine, beers, and wine, and there's a champagne and oyster bar as well. At night, sit on one of the leather armchairs of the club in the former bank vault and order a cocktail.
Aux Armes de Bruxelles
Almost one century old, this is a Brussels institution that's arguably the best place in town for mussels or other Belgian specialties. It's located close to the Grand Place, and the décor maintains the classic historic look.
Au Vieux Bruxelles
You'd expect to see an authentic 19th century restaurant specializing in mussels to be filled with tourists, but at this one you'll find mostly locals enjoying that specialty served in a variety of ways. Join them in the wood-panelled interior and why not also enjoy some escargots (snails)?
Belgo Belge
For traditional Belgian dishes look for this restaurant on the corner of Rue St. Boniface, a popular hangout for EU politicians. It has a quirky design inside, but when the sun is out, sit at the shady terrace in the front.
Comme Chez Soi
The space is small, but it's big on everything else. That includes the number of Michelin stars - it was given three of them, although it was later awarded with two. It's the top gourmet restaurant in Belgium, with an intimate Art Nouveau interior where the modern French food is served. It's naturally pricey (especially the wine), and you should book at least one month in advance.
La Manufacture
The industrial ambience of the interior recalls the days when this was the workshop of a Delvaux leather company. It's now a restaurant serving European and Asian cuisine that may also be sampled in the bamboo-filled courtyard when weather permits.
La Quincaillerie
With a striking wooden-panelled interior that includes an ornate cast-iron staircase, this restaurant has one of the most beautiful dining spaces in the city. It used to be a hardware store, but now you can have the specialty seafood dishes surrounded by a stunning ambience. Get a table on the balcony for a panoramic view.
De Ultieme Hallucinatie
What was once an art nouveau family mansion became this restaurant serving fine French food, although you'll most likely hear Dutch being spoken (staff does also speak French and English).
Restaurant Vincent
Many of the restaurants in this area are overpriced tourist traps, but Vincent is an exception. It has a beautiful tiled interior where waiters in white jackets serve traditional dishes at above-average prices.
