CAFE RICHE - 17 Shar'a Talaat Harb Street
Originally opened in 1908, this Cairo institution was renovated in 2007 to look as it did when it was a haunt of the city's 20th century artistic community. The walls show caricatures and old photos of Cairo's famous faces of the past, while a spiral staircase takes you to a basement bar. On the menu you'll see salads and grilled meats.
Ayyubid Café
Confirm if Cairo really is the city of a thousand minarets as you enjoy one of the most spectacular views over the city from this café. It serves light meals, but you can pass by simply for pastries and coffee in the morning and observe the city come to life for another day.
Lakeside Café
You can come at any time of the day for Oriental or Lebanese specialties as you sit around palm trees overlooking a lake and Mohamed Ali Mosque.
Citadel View Studio Misr
At this restaurant in El Azhar Park you can choose the buffet or from the a la carte menu and sit indoors or on the terrace. Obviously the terrace is the recommended choice, as you'll be able to admire the city's skyline, although it's even better from upstairs at Citadel View Alain Le Notre which serves pastries and light snacks to go with your coffee as you admire one of the best panoramic views of Cairo.
Abou el Sid
While the retro décor mixes French and Asian touches, the food is regional Egyptian cuisine. It's quite a trendy place, having opened other branches, but it's the original dining room in an Art Deco building that you should visit. On the menu everyone recommends the molokhiyya, the country's famous stew of rabbit or chicken. Puff on a shisha at the end of your meal.
SEQUOIA - 1-3 Abul Feda Street
This is our favorite place in Cairo. It won us over as soon as we arrived and saw the Nile-side location and the overall ambience under the large white Bedouin-style tent. The clientele is made up of well-heeled Egyptians and expats, who enjoy the Egyptian and Lebanese food, the laid-back hipness, and the cocktails before the place turns into a club later in the evening. That's when you'll want to join the attractive crowd to the sounds of Arab dance and house music.
REVOLVING RESTAURANT - Corniche El Nile
It takes 75 minutes to make the 360 degrees around the building, and you'll likely spend more time than that at this restaurant located at the top of the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Book a table and dress smart to enjoy the experience of standing at one of the highest restaurants in the Middle East. The cuisine is French, but you'll be sure you're in Cairo when you look out over the pyramids and the Nile.
The Grill
The name is in English, but the food here is contemporary French. It's found on the third floor of the Serimaris InterContinental and has a modern interior, renovated in 2006 after more than two decades in service. Quite impressive is the list of more than 150 wines, with the bottles neatly displayed in the cellar.
Birdcage
It's one of the restaurants inside the Serimaris InterContinental and is a little pricey but worth it. It serves excellent Thai cuisine in a sophisticated but relaxed environment with specialties like garlic pepper shrimp and seafood salad.
ANDREA - 59-60 Qanaat Maryoutia
On cooler nights you have to choose the indoor dining area, but throughout most of the year try to get a table in the garden at this lively restaurant. It's a Cairo institution and is said to have the best spit-roasted chicken in the city. It comes served with salad, hummus, and freshly baked bread, and its clientele of all ages doesn't seem to order anything else.
LA BODEGA - 157 26th of July St.
This upmarket restaurant-lounge is one of the hottest dining options in the city, so a reservation is recommended. It has a Belle Epoque theme in the décor and the menu is Mediterranean. You can also come by just for cocktails at the Asian-influenced bar, where you're likely to bump into Cairo's celebrities and beautiful people. This is as hip as Cairo gets, and you'll find as many expats as locals.
Le Pacha
Stand in the Nile as you dine at this landmark boat from the turn of the century. It's a little touristy but it's a romantic place with ten restaurants serving international cuisine and Nile views.
