Visiting the souks in Cairo (especially KHAN EL-KHALILI) is more for capturing local color (and the scent of the spices) than to do any serious shopping. Walking around the city will take you past artisans selling their painted papyrus, perfumes, and a variety of crafts, but nothing really spectacular.
So with Cairo lacking a real major shopping district, knowing exactly where to go is all that more important. We've found the shops offering the most authentic buys in the city created by local artists and designers.

Nagada shop, Cairo Nagada
In a city with such high temperatures you'll end up looking for something light and cool to wear. A Lebanese-Swiss duo created brightly colored fashions that are conservative enough to be worn in the city's Islamic neighborhoods, but also stylish enough to be worn anywhere in the Western world.

Townhouse Gallery
Photography exhibits, video installations, and experimental film are just some examples of what you'll find in Cairo's most cutting-edge contemporary art space but the main reason to come here is to look for the art by local artists.

Mouonaya Gallery
Showcasing both Egyptian and Lebanese products, you'll find an excellent selection of hand-embroidered cotton sheets together with special silver and brassware at this gallery of art and home accessories. The purses and handbags will also tempt any woman.

Alef Gallery
Specializing in the arts of the Mediterranean, this gallery brings ancient civilizations to modern times. You'll see high quality handicrafts and home furnishings, many of them so unique that hotels and restaurants have used them to decorate their spaces. We especially love the glasses and the trays.
