Copenhagen is already known as one of the world's major design destinations, especially for homeware. But you'll also want to check out the fresh fashions in the city, particularly the boutiques by GOTHERSGADE street. The city's shoppers demand high quality (which they can afford), so you know your money will always be well spent.

The main shopping street is STROGET, touristy but a must, as you'll find all the chain stores along with some Danish specialties. KRONPRINSENSGADE and the streets surrounding it should also be marked on your map for cutting-edge fashion and designer labels, while BREDGADE offers top-quality 20th century design.
Also don't miss RAVNSBORGGADE for antiques, with several shops clustered in and around it. It's a great place for browsing, where you'll find furniture, glass, silver, and other authentic pieces of art (most shops can arrange shipping).

Remember that shopping is an essential part of life in Copenhagen, an excuse to socialize and go around the town. Don't leave the city without doing the same, and check out the following shops:

SPECIAL DESIGNS

Normann Copenhagen shop Normann
Housed in a 1950s cinema, Normann started out by offering its original lamp designs but then looked around the world for the best design, creating the Normann shop you see today. If you only have time to visit one design mecca in Copenhagen, this should be it, with chairs, lamps, homewares, and fashions delighting those with the most impeccable taste.

Paustian
Those looking for interior design usually head here first. It carries Danish and international brands, but the shop's own line is what should bring you here in the first place. It's also an attraction for architourists, who admire the Jorn Utzon design of the building and stop at the much acclaimed restaurant.

Illums Bolighus
Don't confuse this legendary shop with the "Illum" department store (see below). This is a contemporary Scandinavian design shop, stocking most of the Danish design icons' creations, from lamps to bed linens.

Royal Copenhagen
This beautiful space is the flagship store of the famous Royal Copenhagen porcelain company. It presents the best quality design in the country, as it has for over two centuries. Check out the signature dinnerware and hand-painted porcelain, which the multilingual staff can help you in selecting. There is also a free museum showing special and rare pieces, and a good café perfect for a rainy day.

Georg Jensen
The Copenhagen shop of Denmark's Georg Jensen can't be missed. Not only is it located next to other shopping landmarks in the center of the city, but it also offers great, timeless designs in jewelry, silverware, candlesticks, and pens.

Hay House
Works by international designers are spread through this space opened in 2008 with the goal of showcasing the best of Danish furniture and encouraging the type of innovation seen in the mid 20th-century. The staff really knows their stuff and will inspire you into getting your perfect piece.

COOL FASHIONS

Mads Norgaard
Norgaard is a Danish fashion icon, creating sophisticated and stylish menswear for over two decades. In addition to the original designs, the shop also stocks other brands like Fred Perry, Paul Smith, and Denmark's Henrik Vibskov.

IL Copenhagen shop IL
"IL" could very much stand for "international luxury," as this shop offers top fashion brands from around the world, as well as accessories and a small selection of fashion and art publications.

Storm
This lifestyle store is where many of the city's young and hip go for their latest fashions, accessories, music, and magazines. The cutting edge fashion is by many of the local designers as well as other more established names.

ONE-STOP SHOPPING

Magasin du Nord
This is the city's oldest and largest department store, and one of the city's main shopping addresses since 1879. Very conveniently located in the center of the city, it has a good young fashion department stocking Scandinavian designer labels, and a popular gourmet shop on the lower level.

Illum
This well-designed department store has a wide range of fragrances, fashions, and furnishings. Worth checking out are the porcelain and crystal products, as well as the cool Scandinavian brands you'll find on the ground floor.
