Eating & Drinking in Florence |

Carabé
We haven't tried all of them, but we're going to agree with the hype that this is the best gelateria in the city. It's not far from the Duomo so if you're in the mood for some ice cream you're in luck because it's likely not to be very far from where you are. The flavors to try are those with nuts carefully selected from Sicily, such as almond, hazelnut, and pistachio.
Caffè Rivoire
The location on Piazza della Signoria is attractive enough, but then there's the best hot chocolate in the city (and other chocolate treats), and you won't want to miss this café. You can stay for as long as you want people-watching from its tables but keep in mind that this has become a touristy place and things can often be overpriced.
Caffè Pitti
The name comes from its location by Palazzo Pitti, and it's a good stop in between sightseeing for a light meal of Tuscan cuisine. You can sit inside but the best spot to get a table is on the terrace overlooking the piazza.
GIACOSA - Via Tournboni 83R
It opens early in the morning, perfect for a morning coffee (which is excellent here), although it's also a good choice for a light lunch of pasta salads and sandwiches or an evening cocktail.
Caffe La Torre
A good inexpensive choice for eating and drinking, this popular café-restaurant also offers live music ranging from jazz to blues.
Filipepe
The chic décor (candles, linen drapes, and antique chairs) may have a classic look, but everything else about this restaurant is very contemporary. The menu lists creative southern Italian dishes which can be pleasantly enjoyed in the small interior garden (only big enough for about a dozen people), and washed down with one of the several Italian wines on the list.
Cibreo
Justly considered one of Florence's best restaurants, Cibreo presents inventive seafood on a menu that changes daily but that always lists refined Tuscan fare. The prices are above average but reasonable for the caliber of the food and service. Next door is the Trattoria, the less formal version of the restaurant with an abridged menu served on communal tables for half the price.
Cantina Barbagianni
Known for its creative versions of Tuscan cuisine, this restaurant has a romantic dining area with candlelit tables in the medieval basement. It also offers a good wine list and dessert options.
Enoteca Pinchiorri
The Michelin stars given to this restaurant are well deserved, as it is an exceptional culinary temple where the finest French and Italian haute cuisine is served. It is also one of the most expensive dining options in all of Italy, housed in a grand Renaissance palace and with a formal and luxurious atmosphere (dress accordingly). The wine list offers a fine selection of vintages, while the high-quality cuisine will satisfy even the most demanding foodies, with main courses consisting of meat, fish, and game.
Il Latini
At a time when fusions or contemporary versions of different cuisines are the trend, this classic family restaurant can be quite refreshing. It's therefore a unique place to sample the original flavors of Tuscany in a lively and friendly atmosphere. Sit at the wooden tables and wait for a still-authentic Italian dining experience accompanied by a good red wine and finished with a tiramisu.
Olio & Convivium
More than a restaurant, this is a gastronomic emporium, selling a selection of wine, cheese, different types of Italian olive oils, and prepared food to go, while at the tables you'll be served imaginative Tuscan dishes. The menus change every season.
La Giostra
This restaurant hopes to create a sophisticated dining experience, but expect more comfort food than cutting-edge gourmet cuisine. The décor is in fact elegant and the staff does make you feel welcome from the start, and bring you the creations of the chef/owner who just happens to also be a Habsburg prince. This has become quite a popular place, so booking ahead is a must.
