Jeronimos 8 and
Fontana Park are two choices for those looking
to stay in stylish design hotels.
Jeronimos 8 is right around the corner
from the city's main monuments, while Fontana Park is in the city's business center and just minutes from the touristic heart of Lisbon. Its design is quite stunning, with love-it-or-hate-it black and white covering most of the rooms and hallways, while the bar is a hip destination for late-afternoon cocktails.
More affordable but in an unbeatable location facing the city's main square downtown is the Internacional Design Hotel. It's a beautifully restored building with rooms featuring colorful modern-design furnishings.
With balconies wonderfully facing the river between two of the city's most famous landmarks (the Monument of the Discoveries and the Tower of Belém) is the Altis Belém Hotel, also home to a spa, an excellent restaurant, and café offering outdoor seating and a fabulous weekend brunch.
The Bairro Alto Hotel is Lisbon's hotel of the moment. Located at the doorstep of the city's shopping and nightlife area, it is a design/boutique hotel for discerning young travelers (don't miss its rooftop bar for the wonderful city views, even if you're not staying at the hotel). Of the same category is Heritage Avenida da Liberdade, designed by the Portuguese designer responsible for Paris' Buddha Bar and New York's Man Ray.
Down the same avenue is Tivoli Jardim, equally stylish in its rooms and home to Olivier Restaurant, one of the best in the city, offering a creative menu by a star chef. Guests can also enjoy the facilities of Tivoli Lisboa next door, including the outdoor heated swimming pool. This hotel also has two excellent restaurants, Brasserie Flo on the ground floor and Terraço at the top offering panoramic city views. Also overlooking the city is the rooftop Sky Bar which unfortunately is only open during the summer. The rooms feature an elegant décor, although we prefer the contemporary simplicity of those at Tivoli Jardim.
Elegant and sophisticated rooms are also found at Chiado 16, luxury apartments located in Lisbon's most fashionable neighborhood.
CHARM
Charm hotels include As Janelas Verdes and York House (both in a quiet residential area but close enough to the center), and Solar do Castelo, located right by the walls of St. George's Castle.
VIEWS
Albergaria Senhora do Monte and Olissipo Castelo are two hotels providing city views along with good service, while VIP Eden is an inexpensive option to consider in the heart of the city.
SPLURGE
For true luxury, splurge at Lapa Palace, or Pestana Palace. Pestana Palace has the look of a royal residence mixed with contemporary touches and a beautiful garden (you can see it in Madonna's I'm Going to Tell You a Secret DVD, as this was where she stayed on her visit to Lisbon), while Lapa Palace is located in the city's peaceful residential neighborhood of Lapa and has one of the most beautiful gardens in Lisbon. It's easy to see why these are the two favorites of those looking for the best accommodation Lisbon has to offer.
BEACH HOTELS
If you want to stay closer to the sea, the Farol Design Hotel is found just a few minutes away from center of Lisbon by train in the seaside town of Cascais. It's the most stylish accommodation on the coast of Lisbon, standing right above the ocean. Also overlooking the sea is Fortaleza do Guincho Hotel, housed in a 17th century fortress by a world-famous windsurfing beach.
Also overlooking the beach is Hotel Albatroz, with a beachside restaurant and an elegantly-decorated interior. An even more luxurious option (ideal if you're traveling with special company) is the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel and Spa. Housed in the former residence of the exiled King Umberto II of Italy, its interior decoration has a warm classical feel, while the spa offers a treatment pool, ice fountain and jet, and Turkish bath. All rooms have great views, either of the sea or the garden.
Ocean views, golf, spa, large pools, and a tennis court are just some examples of what's at Quinta da Marinha Golf Resort between Cascais and Sintra.
Not as big but also offering luxury in a beautiful oceanfront setting is Senhora da Guia. This chic, intimate spot offers seclusion and relaxation under pine trees and by the pool, but the urban spendors of Lisbon are close by.

CHEAP HOSTELS
Forget the typical basic, soulless backpacker-type hostel. Lisbon has a number of cheap design hostels filled with character, offering both mixed dorms and private rooms.
One of our favorites is Lisbon Poets Hostel, located in Chiado and just around the corner from Bairro Alto, the two liveliest districts in the city.
Another favorite is Travellers House, in an excellent location in the main pedestrian street in the heart of downtown Lisbon. The contemporary design alone makes this an excellent value.
Also scoring points for its fantastic design and decoration is Black & White Lisbon Hostel, within walking distance to Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main avenue.
Yet another good option is Lisbon Lounge, combining style, modernity, and comfort. There is also a lounge with internet access.
Just as modern and stylish is Oasis Backpackers Mansion, only steps away from the restaurants and nightlife of Bairro Alto. But those wishing to actually stay in the middle of the party scene should consider Bairro Alto Travellers. Located in the heart of Bairro Alto, it offers clean and modern facilities.
We also like the very welcoming Living Lounge Hostel, just as centrally located downtown and by the shopping and cafe district of Chiado.
Its closest competitor for young modern travelers is Lisbon Story Guesthouse, with free internet, a kitchen, and comfortable beds.
