LUXURY

Lisbon offers the high-end shopping experience with the usual big names that you'd expect in a European capital. They're found down AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE Lisbon shopping in Avenida da Liberdade (Louis Vuitton, Emporium Armani, D&G, Escada, TOD's, etc.) and RUA GARRETT (Hugo Boss, Hermès, etc.) -- but the real Lisbon shopping experience is finding unique shops filled with character and charm.

ONLY IN LISBON

LUVARIA ULISSES has plenty of that character and charm (located on Rua do Carmo, 87A). We are willing to bet this is the tiniest shop in the world. With space for only one person at a time, it specializes in hand-made gloves. The façade remains as it was when it opened in 1925.
Even older is CASA DAS VELAS LORETO (Rua Loreto, 53), selling candles of various colors and shapes since 1789. This delightful wood-panelled shop is a trip back in time and worth a peek even if you don't buy.
Another museum-worthy shop is OURIVESARIA ALIANÇA (Rua Garrett, 50), with a gilded interior that would fit right in a Louis XV palace. Hand mirrors, pendants, hair brushes, and watches are just a few examples of what is found here.

TRENDY

Another side of Lisbon shopping that should not be missed are its trendy, alternative shops. The hippest and most artsy are all found in Bairro Alto's RUA DO NORTE. This charming street with laundry hanging from wrought-iron balconies has the best of urban wear. Start at SNEAKERS DELIGHT at numbers 30-32, with walls just as colorful as the several brands of sneakers it presents on the floor. Continue up the street for EL DORADO (at number 23), one of the first alternative clothing shops in Lisbon, selling retro gear mainly from London.
You'll come across Bad Bones at number 85. This tattoo and piercings shop also sells its own merchandise.
Rua do Norte used to also be home to one of Lisbon youth's favorite shops, but it has moved downtown. That's A Outra Face da Lua, filled with interesting retro stuff, from clothing to decorative objects. It also has a café that is a good choice for a tea break.
For more nostalgia and kitsch, don't miss Chiado's A Vida Portuguesa which stocks some wonderful products that you'd expect to find at your great-grandmother's house.

Loja d'Atalaia shop in Lisbon

DESIGN

For contemporary design check out Loja d'Atalaia or the shops in the Santos design district. The biggest one is Paris:Sete, offering products from the leading international designers and brands.

LOCAL CHIC

Home-grown fashion design is found back in Chiado's Ana Salazar boutique. She's the pioneer of fashion design in Portugal, and this shop includes both men's and women's wear.
Back in Bairro Alto is the shop of the currently most international Portuguese designer Fatima Lopes. Her boutique on Rua da Atalaia features her unique style (but excluding the famous US$1million diamond bikini she once wore herself down the catwalk...)
