Los Angeles nightlife defines glitz. Stunningly designed bars and clubs offer food and star sightings to attract you for a meal followed by top DJs to make you stay until morning. But it's a fickle scene, with hipsters and wannabe celebrities moving on to the next hot club once they've been there done that. So the hottest club today may well be closed by next weekend, and choosing the best hotspots is limited to measuring the buzz around them. We've done that, but also recommend the well-established survivors and the ones with the most staying power. Spend your LA nights at one of the bars and clubs below and you can leave assured that you've experienced the best the city has to offer after the sun sets. For all others, drive down Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood and follow the crowds to whatever hangout they're heading to. That's tonight's place to be.

Apple Lounge
This restaurant-lounge has become one of the premiere dining and drinking destinations in LA, often mentioned in gossip magazines for being a celeb magnet. The menu features creations by a top young chef who only uses fresh organic ingredients, while at the dark basement lounge drinks are served to the beautiful people and the DJ contributes to an atmosphere that's as much New York as it is L.A.

Nic's Vodbox
Everyone you'll encounter at this martini lounge/restaurant/bar is indifferent to the celebrities walking through the door. That's because they're just as cool, and are there for the luxury vodka selections displayed in the walk-in freezer where guests are ushered in wearing faux-fur.

Tower Bar, Los Angeles Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower
This is the place to see and be seen, the upscale bar and restaurant on the fourth floor of the art deco Sunset Tower Hotel. Sit next to the windows for the views and you can't be in a more glamorous spot in the city.

Bar Nineteen 12
Looking to experience a night of Hollywood glamour? This bar at the landmark Beverly Hills Hotel serves some inventive drinks and snacks like black pearl caviar with buckwheat blinis. You'll see a smattering of celebrities, but it's mostly a (still) anonymous young trendy Hollywood crowd here.

The Abbey
It's well known as a major gay hotspot, but this restaurant, bar, and nightclub is really a hot destination for anyone in town. It's got a beautiful outdoor space, but indoor lounge areas are just as comfortable, where you can sample the American comfort food and expensive drinks.

Foxtail
You can come here for dinner or clubbing, or both. It's a supper club and lounge in a designer interior showing Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences. Expect gourmet food at the restaurant downstairs and a crowd of beautiful people (some of them even familiar Hollywood faces) at the lounge and club upstairs.

Sbar
Designed by Philippe Starck, this bar has become one of Hollywood's hottest nightlife addresses. Have a post-dinner cocktail at this lounge, where you can sit on luxurious mismatched chairs, including the Louis XV dining chair surrounded by photographs of Versailles on the walls.

Area
Looking like an interior design shop, the modern space of this bar-club attracts Hollywood partygoers who also socialize at the outdoor patio. Sexy and sophisticated, come here if you're looking for five-star service.

Avalon
Formerly "The Palace" that served as the venue for legendary concerts over the decades (hosting everyone from The Beatles to Nirvana), this theatre-nightclub now attracts big-name DJs. It's a favorite spot for a variety of events, but especially for its club nights, a late-night meal at the "Honey" bistro and loungind at the sexy "Spider Club."

Citizen Smith
Many Hollywood supper clubs are hip one day and closed by the following night. This one seems to have staying power, and not just because of its location on glamorous Cahuenga Boulevard. The food is actually good (refined comfort food), and the interior design is just as stunning the second and third time you see it as during your first visit. It's a dimly-lit space with high ceilings and giant chandeliers, but if you want to catch some air, there's a patio in the back. The clubbing atmosphere starts at around 11PM, although food is served until 4 in the morning.
