Brazil's shopping capital may be São Paulo, but it was Rio that defined the Brazilian style. And don't think that simply means thongs and Havaianas. There are the sporty fashions of Osklen, the elegant designs at Maria Bonita (see below), and yes, the world's sexiest bikinis at Salinas (see below). You can find out more about these and other shops below, while for the international luxury brands head to Ipanema's RUA GARCIA D'AVILA. Other major shopping streets where you'll likely find everything you're looking for are AVENIDA ATAÚLFO DE PAIVA in Leblon and RUA VISCONDE DE PIRAJÁ in Ipanema. For everything under one roof, visit the Fashion Mall in the São Conrado district.

Loja Novo Desenho shop, Rio de Janeiro Loja Novo Desenho
This is the shop of Rio's modern art museum and is the place to get a piece of contemporary Brazilian design. Everything is exclusively Brazilian, from the furniture, to the homeware and jewelry.

Mercado Moderno
Specializing in vintage design from the 1950s to the 80s, this shop is a must for design addicts and collectors. Local craftsmen restore all the unique pieces, many of them by renowned artists like Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues.

Maria Bonita
Maria Candida Sarmento was one of Brazil's major designers and her shops have survived her, offering chic styles that please the most fashionable Cariocas. Check out the shop at 149 Rua Vinicius de Moraes for the elegant and cosmopolitan designs she was famous for, and also visit the second shop Maria Bonita Extra which presents more casual looks.

Isabela Capeto
After studying fashion in Italy, Isabela Capeto returned to Brazil and worked with some of Brazil's top designers before creating her own label. All of her pieces are handmade and are now found all over the world. Her first shop was open in Rio in 2005, and can be found in Leblon.

Antonio Bernardo
Rio native Antonio Bernardo (born in the Leblon neighborhood) is currently the country's most acclaimed jeweler and designer. His creations are mostly in gold and shown at his "Antonio Bernardo Space" in Ipanenma together with other special exhibitions. They are sold in a few shops around the city, with the one in the Forum de Ipanema in Rua Visconde de Pirajá as the most accessible.

Salinas
Where else in the world would you find both summer and winter bikinis? Only in Rio, and for that Rio-style beachwear you're looking for, this is the shop to visit. It's found on several locations, from the Fashion Mall to Leblon's chic Rua Ataúlfo de Paiva at number 270.
