The Eternal City at Night |
|
There is a growing trend in Rome for bookshop wine-bars, and BAR A BOOK (Via dei Piceni 23) is tops for books and booze. It's a cute little place that serves as a convivial spot for the laidback artsy and intellectual types both day and night. The retro design décor is also attractive, making this the perfect spot for an early-evening drink or get-together.
But the biggest buzz in town is for SOCIÉTÉ LUTÈCE (Piazza Montevecchio 17), a small bar with a very attractive staff and an equally good-looking clientele. If you somehow forget to have dinner, this place has a buffet until around 10PM with pastas and salads. In good weather, many stand outside with mojito in hand. This is also where you'll find the best cocktails in town.
But competition comes from artsy-chic Freni e Frizioni, open all day (and good for breakfast or a light lunch), but especially popular at night, when it also serves a healthy buffet. Decorated by contemporary artists (this used to be a car garage), it can get quite crowded during the after-dinner drinks hours, when the mojito is especially popular.
Salotto 42 is a fashionable spot for the beautiful people to meet for a cappuccino during the day, and to sip cocktails at night. Vintage furniture and a 19th century Murano crystal chandelier make up the décor, while magazines on trends and arts are read while lounging with tapas-style Swedish dishes.
Also stylish for a stylish crowd is BLOOM (Via del Teatro Pace, 30), a lounge-club with Philip Starck lighting, a fantastic bar, and some good sushi.
GOA (Via Libetta 13) is a trance-music super-club featuring superstar DJs with an Indian (or Bollywood)-inspired interior. Sexy 20- to 30-somethings crowd the dancefloor. Be warned: it closes for the summer!
Also famous (but closed from July to September) is Gilda, which attracts some V.I.Politicians and celebrities -- jackets and shoes are required. It is one of the oldest nighttime spots in the city, and also includes a restaurant and sushi bar.
The summer belongs to Joia, when good weather invites a night on its rooftop terrace. Inside, the dancefloor spills dance and top-chart sounds.
But the hippest club of the moment is Rialto SanAmbrogio. Set in a 16th century convent, it gets the coolest crowd who also come here for book launches, video projections, and even theatre.
Alternatively, head to La Maison, the place for a sexy night on the dance floor (especially on a Sunday night!). Be sure to dress up to make it past the doormen, so you can admire the gilded mirrors, chandeliers, and velvet that make up the décor.
