CAFÉS
Gina is Rome's most fashionable café. Located just around the corner from the Spanish Steps, it attracts the social elite who enjoy its fresh salads, soups, and panini.
Just as trendy is café/bistro/patisserie Fabrica, a former factory next door to a fish and
meat market not too
far from the Vatican. The locals come for the "high tea" after 9PM, while weekend brunches are also as popular.
Located in the epicentre of the city's coolest neighbourhood, La Bottega del Caffé is ideal for a light lunch, when students and bohemians hang around in the square. Enjoy the contemporary atmosphere of the interior while savouring the excellent cakes and desserts.
For the best coffee in the city, most Romans will tell you that it is found at Café Sant'Eustachio. Stop by for a quick visit after seeing the Pantheon nearby but if you also want to fill your stomach, head to ANTICA ENOTECA DELLA CROCE (Via della Croce 76/b, Piazza di Spagna) close to the Spanish Steps. It offers some great antipasti, salads, and pastas along with a vast selection of wines, in a cool, spacious interior.
For a peaceful brunch or snack in beautiful surroundings, consider Caffeteria d'Art, overlooking the lovely cloisters of the Chiostro del Bramante Museum.
But if it's some tea you're craving, the place to go is THÈ VERDE (46 Via Bocca di Leone). It is the ideal spot for a drink after Via dei Condotti shopping, with over 100 types of teas and infusions. There are also tables outside, where you should leave room for one of the enticing desserts.
RESTAURANTS
Alta cucina gourmet dining or simple-yet-trendy restaurants, these are the culinary destinations in Rome:
One of the most glamorous, exclusive and pricey restaurants in the city is HOSTERIA DEL PESCE (Via di Monserrato 25c). This is seafood heaven and also has a significant champagne list.
Also excellent for seafood is La Rosetta, just steps away from the Pantheon. Everything from the service, to food, to presentation is excellent, which explains the higher prices. The atmosphere is formal. Try the home-made desserts.
Another fashionable place specializing in seafood is F.I.S.H., which also offers a great sushi bar. As one of the trendiest places in Rome, it is a good idea to call and book ahead.
But one of the slickest modern restaurants in the city is Trattoria. Set in a minimalist space, it is usually taken over by a fashionable crowd.
Just as stylish is Glass Hostaria, a contemporary restaurant with ultra-modern design consisting of some cool lighting, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The dishes are modern Italian and the prices are reasonable.
Classifying as both trendy and classic is Antico Arco, located in a renovated villa. It is a little out of the way, but is worth the effort of finding. It serves modern cuisine that includes home-made bread and olive oil in a cosy room, accompanied by a chill-out soundtrack.
Just as easy to miss is UNO E BINO (Via degli Equi 58), but this chic restaurant-wine bar has a world-class wine selection and an inviting intimate atmosphere enhanced by loungy background music. It offers both a degustazione and an à la carte menu.
Enoteca Ferrara is a previous winner of "Best Enoteca in Italy" and serves excellent-quality international wines in specialy-designed glasses. It also aspires to be one of Rome's gastronomic highlights, although the reason to come here is really for the wine experience.
'Gusto is also part wine-bar, part pizzeria, part bookshop. The wine bar at the back is relaxed, while the restaurant is a little more pretentious. It is also a good choice for weekend brunches.
But our vote for coolest place to eat in the city goes to TRAM TRAM (Via dei Reti 44-46). This trattoria has a distinctive atmosphere created by motifs of old trams on the walls, and a young crowd gathering for the tasty food.
Vizi Capitali is another interesting choice. This "seven deadly sins" restaurant has white minimalist walls mixed with some wooden and gold decorations, and can be romantic or informal. The food is good and prices are reasonable for the quality and service. It is very popular, especially before a night out in Trastevere.
But this being Italy, we must also recommend the trendiest pizzeria of the moment, and that would be ReCafe. It is spacious with minimalist furniture.
For vegetarians, Arancia Blu is an interestingly-decorated restaurant usually crowded by artists. In addition to the creative vegetarian servings, there is a vast selection of wines and some excellent desserts.
And now for something completely different -- raw food. No, Crudo is not the first place in the world to offer uncooked meals but this New York-style lounge-bar-restaurant is worth checking out if only for the ambience and decor. And the well-presented food is good too.
