You'll read or be told that Venice lacks an exciting nightlife. When you step outside in the evening, you'll confirm that to be true. But you'll be wrong. Sure this is not a clubbing city, and there isn't much streetlife after dinner. But there are now more than a handful of attractive bars and lounges for a cocktail that would fit quite well in one of the big metropolises of the world. They are elegant, stylish places where young and hip, and older and sophisticated crowds choose to head to for a night of drinks and chilling out. You'll find them at the places below:

Zen Cafe, Venice ZEN CAFE - Via Torre Belfredo, 110, Mestre
The name and the minimalist décor suggest an Asian theme, and that's what you'll get, with waiters dressed like monks bringing you some delicious cocktails, always to the sound of a chill-out soundtrack. It's worth the trip to Mestre just to experience it, and you'll find that Venice's trendiest crowds do the same.

HARRY'S BAR - Calle Vallaresso 1323
Everyone recommends a stop at this legendary bar (and maybe that's why it's become something of a tourist trap). It's a Venetian institution, maintaining its classic décor and sophisticated ambience, much like when Ernest Hemingway used to pass by. It's not cheap, but be sure to have at least one cocktail, and the one to choose is its famous Bellini.

BACARO LOUNGE - Salizzada San Moise
A former cinema just around the corner from the famous Harry's Bar (see above) has been renovated to now serve as this chic bar. Its cool, contemporary minimalist design has attracted Venetian fashionistas, who mostly show up for cocktails, while other times also enjoy the food at the restaurant. We recommended it for a drink late in the afternoon, or for an after-dinner drink around the sleek circular bar.

Aurora
Here's a place in Piazza San Marco that doesn't stand as a museum, but rather as a happening hangout for young crowds (mostly in their 30s) to get together. Grab a drink at the bar, and enjoy the live music, DJs, and VJs providing the entertainment.

Orange
As you can probably guess, the interior of this bar is mostly painted in orange. It has a simple modern design and is a cool hangout for young crowds looking for cocktails or a glass of wine or champagne. It also serves meals, and you can sit outside on the terrace.

947 Club
Venice's most exclusive club has DJs mixing dance sounds, but best of all is the food served at the restaurant and lounging with a drink at the bar. If you're staying in Venice for a while, it's a good idea to become a member, but if you're just a tourist passing by, you can find out how to get in at the door.

Skyline Bar
If you're not staying at the hotel, take a vaporetto to the
Molino Stucky Hilton and go up to its bar for a cocktail at sunset while overlooking the city from above. After your drink, check out the city's only rooftop pool for more breathtaking views.

B Bar
The bar at the Bauer Hotel has been a favorite for decades, and its décor creates an elegant 1950s ambience. Sit drinking your Spritz accompanied by a light snack and enjoy the live entertainment.

Piccolo Mondo
Venice's college students choose to party here on weekends, as it's not far from the city's university campus and has DJs mixing the sounds for some dancing and drinking. There are some theme nights, and although many Venetians would never admit to coming here, it's the place to meet young foreign students.
