Window-shop down CALLE LARGA XXII MARZO west of Piazza San Marco for all the big-name fashion labels you expect to find in any Italian city. Other upscale shops line the streets collectively known as the MERCERIE, but note that prices in Venice are generally higher than in Rome or Florence. The best buys in the city are its crafts, especially glassware from Murano, lace from Burano, and the famous papier-mâché masks. There are so many shops selling those crafts, that many are of mass-produced low quality and very likely even made in China. To make sure it's an authentic Venetian item, look at the price. If it's an astronomical amount, it's likely to be the real thing. You'll need to take some time to look around and find the truly original pieces, with a trip to Murano being the best idea if you're really serious about special glassware.
You also can't leave Venice without visiting the bustling RIALTO MARKET, taking place every morning from Monday to Saturday by the Rialto Bridge. You'll find Venetians buying their fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and a variety of cheeses here.

THE FAMOUS GLASS

Murano Collezioni shop, Venice Murano Collezioni
Visit Murano for this showroom presenting and selling Murano Crystal glass in a museum-like space where you'll find classic pieces together with recent creations by modern designers.

Marina e Susanna Sent
Their shops may be named after them, but these two sisters owe their business to their family which for generations has been involved in Murano glass-making. Take a look at their glass jewelry and pieces by local artists at the shop in Venice or Murano.

Zora de Venezia
This upmarket boutique sells the creations of Zora de Venezia made in glass or 24 carat gold. They are collectible pieces made with ancient Murano methods, with your attention likely to go to the beautiful centrepieces, luxurious accessories and glasses.

LOCAL CREATIONS

Tragicomica
You'll find masks and costumes being sold at shops all over the city, but Tragicomica actually makes it own products, and if you're in Venice for its Carnival, find out here where the best parties are. Even if you don't plan to buy anything, it can be quite a fascinating visit.

Jesurum
A perfect gift from Venice for yourself or someone else back home is found at this shop specializing in lace and embroidery. Many pieces are quite affordable, while others (often handmade) are extra special creations at extra high prices.

SPECIAL DESIGNS

Antonia Miletto
Antonia Miletto comes up with the designs and has Italian artisans create some beautiful jewelry which is then showcased at her Venice shop. You'll find exotic woods in many of the pieces, from ebony rings decorated with diamonds to cocobolo earrings.

Attombri
You'll probably think you're walking through a museum as you step into this shop selling unique jewelry and authentic works of art, with many of them using Murano glass beads. Some pieces are so beautiful that big fashion names such as Dolce & Gabbana have used them to accessorize their collections.

Madera
The minimalist, traditional, and contemporary designs of this shop are some of the best buys in Venice. There is a variety of exotic woods and ceramics, creating truly elegant and unique objects, from dishware to jewelry.

Gaggio
You don't have to be a great admirer of interior design to love this place. Designer Emma Gaggio creates thin silk velvets hand-printed with patterns inspired by Venetian traditions, creating motifs that adorn the world's most luxurious homes. There's a rich variety of colors, and you'll surely fall in love with the magnificent cushions or lampshades to take back home.

LOCAL FLAVORS

Pasticceria Marchini
Venice once monopolized the sugar trade and this shop satisfies the city's cravings for something sweet. It makes biscuits from old traditional recipes, and chocolate confections using natural ingredients.

Vizio Virtu
Get your chocolate fix at this mouth-watering shop which mixes cocoa with some unusual, some traditional ingredients. There are chocolates with pumpkin, chocolates with red wine, or chocolates with oriental spices, and if that's not enough there's an exquisite chocolate fondue, chocolate spreads, and both hot and iced chocolate drinks.

ONE-STOP SHOPPING

Coin
Venice's branch of this department store (found on Cannaregio 5787) is not huge but offers a good selection of men's and women's fashions and accessories together with beauty products and homeware.
