Onyx Bar
This stylish bar inside the Do & Co Hotel overlooks the city's cathedral from its huge glass windows. The hip young crowd loves the cocktails here, which they enjoy while sitting on Turkish damask chairs and listening to the beats of house music.
Loos Bar
Also known as "the American bar," this dark bar was designed by famous architect Adolf Loos. It could be described as the world's first modern bar, dating from 1908 and given very little ornamentation. It used natural materials, and placed mirrors to create the illusion of a bigger space, where arty types enjoy the "American-style" cocktails to the sounds of jazz.
Planters Club
This cocktail bar built in colonial-style is worth checking out for the ambience alone. You can sit by the potted palms as you choose from hundreds of whiskies and rums with the assistance of the knowledgeable staff. They won't all be cheap, but considering what is offered, what you pay is reasonable.
Sky Bar
Mozart died here. Not in this building, but in the one that once stood on this site. Despite that morbid connection, this is often a fun place to be for an early evening drink. The city's nouveaux riches love it, the young hipsters not so much, but no one can argue that the city views from the top floor are reason enough to come here.
Bar Italia Lounge
Many Vienesse come here for an Italian lunch, but it's in the evening that it gets the biggest crowd. Trendy locals eat the restaurant and then go for a drink at the lounge downtairs, all surrounded by a slick décor.
Shambala Bar at Meridien Hotel
The design of this bar was by Yvonne Golds, who used lighting to a stunning effect. It also displays video installations and occasionally, the work of local graphic artists, and is always a hot hangout for the city's trendsetters.
Volksgarten
This Vienna classic often hosts some of the world's hottest DJs. They spin in the Clubdiskothek room, entered through the Winter Garden, a place that attracts the VIPs and the beautiful people. During the good weather months the Evergreen Garden is open as the best place in town for a cocktail, and in "The Banana" pavilion there's a weekly party that attracts the city's young crowds.
SASS
A not-so-big disco aspiring to be a super club, Sass aims for an upscale and slightly older crowd. Everyone sits on the leather couches as they drink the above-average-priced cocktails, before taking over the dancefloor. The music is techno, which often blasts until dawn during the after-hours parties.
Passage
Instead of cluttering the space with furnishings, the decor of this super club is made up of clever use of lighting. It creates a cool effect for the crowds that come here for the guest-appearances by some of the world's top DJs.
Flex
Set in an industrial-looking space, this popular nightclub could very well be in London, Berlin, or New York. You'll find fans of electronic beats (many of them the youngest in Vienna's night) raving to the selections of top DJs.
