A night out in Washington DC |
|
You never hear that DC is an exciting city with lots going on at night. Those who tell you that Washington is boring have not been in the city recently. The last couple of years have brought it some high-profile lounges and clubs, while others have renovated and even changed names to compete with the new openings. Washington's nightlife is now quite varied and its glowing hotpots are even attracting the attention of national magazines. Dress your best and head to one of the places below, and be among the first to let everyone know how much of a happening place Washington is right now. Or maybe just keep that to yourself.
Blue Gin
Located in the heart of Georgetown, this is currently one of the most fashionable hotspots in the city. Its minimalist, cutting edge space includes three bars and a large dancefloor, with music ranging from chill-out to 80s to house and R&B, as abstract videos are shown on plasma screens. You can also nibble on contemporary American flavors and order some fantastic cocktails as a sophisticated and mature crowd does the same around you.
Lotus
Washington isn't really a celebrity magnet, but when the famous faces are in town, this is where they go at night. There's sushi at dinnertime, and bottle service throughout the night. Best of all is the interior design, with everything made to look like the shape of a lotus flower. There's also an extensive selection of wines and champagne,
18th St. Lounge
The attractive, carefully-selected people at this club come here not only because it's the hippest and most exclusive address in town, but also because it also hosts the best DJs and has quite a stunning décor. If you can make it past the strict door policy, you'll step into a former mansion (it once served as Teddy Roosevelt's residence) that maintains an opulent decoration, from impressive chandeliers to classic couches. Live jazz bands often perform here on weekends, although it's house music most of the time. Leave your sneakers at home and dress your designer best.
Eye Bar
The best part of this bar is its heated rooftop deck for the "eye"-candy to stop for drinks when they're not on the dancefloor moving to hip hop, reggae, or Latin hits. After a major renovation in the summer of 2008 it now features a hot contemporary interior with plenty of space.
Fly Lounge
You'll get first class service at this airplane-themed lounge where you'll end up feeling like a real jet-setter. It's an upscale place, with a winning combination of lots of bling, drinks, and music.
Lima Lounge
Start at the restaurant for its fine South American cuisine and end at the swanky lounge. If it's a Saturday you'll see the red carpet and velvet rope at the door, telling you this is not the place for you if you're not willing to spend big bucks inside. DJs provide the progressive house and trance sounds on the basement dancefloor.
Modern
Georgetown's M Street could very well stand for "Modern," as this club is one of the best places to hang out on that well-known street and in all of Washington. It's a sleek underground lounge/club with a dancefloor where a young crowd moves to dance mixes and drinks at the central bar or at the tables around it.
Halo
With a good selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, this is a stylish place for the after-dinner hours. It also has plenty of sitting space and cool tunes enjoyed by a mixed gay-straight crowd.
