A city where international politicians and millionaires meet every day of the week, and with a cosmopolitan population living in it, obviously offers all the tastes of the world's cuisines. There are around 2000 restaurants in Washington, and each year (especially the last few) brings new promising choices. Renowned chefs have opened their branches in the American capital, and Georgetown continues to have the largest number of trendy eateries. We've made a careful selection of the places with the most outstanding food, most deserved buzz, and with a variety of flavors worth discovering in DC:

Leopold's Kafe
Located on a quiet alley in Georgetown, this is a European-style café serving breakfast/brunch until 4PM, some excellent salads, and a variety of European pastries and desserts.

Belga Café
The waffles here are a great choice for brunch (on weekends it has a "waffles and chocolate" theme), but there are also authentic Belgian flavors to be tried throughout the day. Go for a Belgian beer, or choose from the light and healthy menu. You can see it being prepared on the open kitchen, or if the weather is good, sit on a sidewalk table.

The Source Restaurant by Wolfgang Puck in Washington DC The Source by Wolfgang Puck
Acclaimed chef Wolfgang Puck offers a creative menu of fish and game dishes with a touch of Asia at this cutting edge space inside the Newseum building. The floor-to-ceiling windows keep the place well illuminated as diners experience some of the finest food in the American capital.

Mandu
How about a Korean brunch? You can get that at this restaurant that is also a cool spot to sample some authentic Korean cuisine in a welcoming setting. There's no Asian fusion here. It's strictly Korean, except for the wines which include California and European labels.

Rasika
"Rasika" is the Sanskrit word for "flavours," and what you'll get at this restaurant are those of India. Despite that ancient connection this is modern place, with an open kitchen allowing you to see the chef working on the innovative cuisine. The décor includes India-inspired paintings and sculptures, and there's a trendy bar for signature cocktails.

2 Amys Pizza
The best pizza in town is found here, the closest to Naples as you'll get in Washington. It's no wonder it's so popular, with the wood-oven-baked gourmet pizzas worth going out of your way to find this place close to the National Cathedral.

Ben's Chili Bowl
The counter and tables have always been filled with loyal customers here due to the now-legendary chilli dogs since 1958. This is a very relaxed place worth going for the cheap food and a taste of Washington history. The "Big Breakfasts" are excellent value.

Hook Restaurant in Washington DC Hook
Seasonal seafood dishes make up most of the menu at this sleek Georgetown restaurant. It's an eco-friendly place using locally-grown produce and the menu changing every day. There are brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, and whatever you choose will likely leave you hooked.

Zaytinya
Although it's located close to Chinatown, this is an upscale restaurant serving authentic Greek, Turkish, and Lebanese cuisines. There are fish and meat dishes but also plenty of vegetarian options, soups, and salads. The comprehensive wine list is equally of Eastern Mediterranean wines.

Comet Ping Pong
It has a strange ping pong theme but it's a surprisingly hip place for pizza and drinks. The theme is reflected on the style of the tables where you'll have the excellent wood oven-baked pizzas in a fun, informal environment.

Michel Richard Citronelle
The exceptional and exquisite food of superchef Michel Richard has made this Georgetown restaurant one of Washington's best. It's all about nouvelle cuisine in a fine dining setting, something that has made it famous nation-wide, and for which you must book a table.

Central Michel Richard
In addition to Citronelle (see above), renowned chef Michel Richard has this other restaurant in the American capital, this one located downtown. It's a chic, more casual place, with American cuisine given a French twist, and with a stylish lounge to unwind with a mojito.

Neyla
This restaurant mixes Mediterranean cultures and serves a variety of dishes ranging from Lebanese mezzas to Spanish paella. Its Georgetown location has helped it gain popularity, but it's the excellent cuisine that created the buzz. The interior is elegant and comfortable, and the knowledgeable staff will guide you on what to choose from the menu.

Sushi Taro
There are times when Washington's entire Japanese embassy shows up at this place. That should tell you something about the authenticity of the Japanese flavors here, and the right to claim the best sushi in the city served in a simple, laid-back space.

Mie N Yu
This award-winning restaurant and bar mixes contemporary American cuisine with the flavors of Asia and the Mediterranean. There are distinct dining areas, each with its own exotic ambience, recalling a colorful Moroccan bazaar, a Turkish tent, or a Tibetan lounge.
