Georgetown's charming boutiques are Washington's best shopping experiences, with a variety of them lining M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. After that, the best places to find unique pieces are in the city's museums whose gift shops not only sell books relating to the collections, but also other products such as jewelry, artwork reproductions, and clothing inspired by their artists. For the chains you're familiar with (from the GAP to Burberry), head to Connecticut Avenue, and if you're looking for crafts, visit the Eastern Market. That flea market is a popular weekend destination, with stalls selling antiques, ethnic artifacts, and food at bargain prices.

Tiny Jewel Box shop, Washington DC Tiny Jewel Box
As you window-shop down Connecticut Avenue, be sure to actually go inside this jewelry shop. It's a well-known Washington institution that in addition to the exquisite designer jewels, also offers a more recent line of home accessories.

Zenith Gallery
This is one of the best galleries in Washington, having exhibited contemporary art for over three decades in the American capital. In addition to its special exhibitions, you can browse through a selection of paintings, photography and sculpture of a wide range of prices.

Political Americana
If you've just gotta have that great American souvenir, head to this shop on Pennsylvania Avenue. In between a bland selection of souvenirs there are special one-of-a-kind pieces and interesting presidential memorabilia such as Eisenhower's Christmas cards.

Mazza Gallerie
Those looking for a shopping mall should choose this one. It's small but very well located (can be reached by metro) and with a variety of shops, including an Ann Taylor and a Neiman Marcus.
