Eating & Drinking in Zurich |
|
What you end up eating in a Zurich restaurant depends on its age. You'll get a menu listing rich (mostly meat) dishes at the oldest, most traditional places, while the more recent and trendier restaurants offer lighter meals inspired by the various cuisines of the world. New or well-established, Zurich restaurants do have something in common -- they are not exactly cheap but what you'll find on your plate will generally be quite good. We're listing the restaurants that stand out in one way or another, and that will likely leave a lasting impression. Whether they're historical favorites, hip newcomers with staying power, or something completely unique you may like to try, these are the places to go in Zurich.
Odeon
The waterfront location automatically makes this one of the most attractive cafes in the city, but it's also a historical place (names like Lenin and Kafka are among previous visitors) serving light meals (pastas and salads) throughout the day.
Widder Restaurant
Zurich's best dining is found inside the Widder Hotel. The Widder serves excellent international cuisine including some great vegetarian choices, with everything wonderfully presented and including a wine list consisting of both regional and international wines.
Rive Gauche
Rive Gauche presents modern fine dining through grilled Mediterranean dishes and a few vegetarian choices. It tends to attract crowds of young businessmen with deep pockets, who also sit at the bar and enjoy the great selection of whiskies.
Casa Aurelio
Book your table at this restaurant to join a young and trendy crowd enjoying some fine Spanish tapas.and traditional fish dishes. The wine list is naturally made up of labels from different regions of Spain.
Casa Ferlin
A sumptuous interior welcomes diners to try some haute Italian cuisine, including excellent homemade pasta. The ravioli is especially outstanding, enjoyed by both visiting businessmen and local families.
Blinde Kuh
If someone tells you this is a "dark" restaurant, don't think that means something of a gothic hangout. You should take that literally, as this is a restaurant where you eat completely in the dark, as in pitch black. Supposedly the gimmick is so that you "see"/taste the food in a different way. Actually, part of the staff is blind, and they can show you that if they can eat in darkness, so can you. But is the food any good? The menus are always changing, but yes, it's actually good, although what brings people here is the experience and not the chef's creations. It's proven to be quite popular, and you must book in advance on weekends to get a table.
Kronenhalle
You may very well end up thinking you're eating in a museum. There are some major works of art on the walls, and you'll be reminded that this has been a celebrity favorite through the decades -- Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent and other legends have dined here. It's perhaps Zurich's most famous restaurant, serving both traditional Swiss and international cuisines that although good, are less memorable than the stunning bar and its bronze lamps, leather seats, and Picasso and Miro paintings hanging on the walls.
Mesa
This Michelin-star chef opened up his own restaurant and decided to only use fresh ingredients. It has worked quite well, mixing European cuisines (leaning on Italian), and serving them in an elegant dining area or a lovely garden when weather permits.
Seidenspinner
This stylish hotspot uses multimedia installations and artfully arranged flowers to decorate the room where fresh, creative dishes are served. It's quite an offbeat place, using only organic and seasonal ingredients in a limited by good menu.
Shinsen - Ginger
What's a city without a great sushi restaurant these days? This one is arguably Zurich's best, where besides sushi there's an Asian-inspired but mostly international menu served in a tastefully decorated space.
